Win streaks: signal or noise?
What happened in a team's next match, grouped by the run it was on. The dashed line is the win rate of teams on no run at all.
Winning runs → next match won
Share of next matches the team won, by current run.
- no run · 2,235 34%
- 1 straight win · 752 40%
- 2 straight wins · 304 41%
- 3 straight wins · 129 43%
- 4+ straight wins · 142 59%
Losing runs → next match won
Share of next matches the team won, by current run.
- no run · 2,247 39%
- 1 straight defeat · 805 37%
- 2 straight defeats · 312 27%
- 3 straight defeats · 119 32%
- 4+ straight defeats · 79 25%
Verdict: win streaks do carry information — teams on four or more straight wins won 59% of their next games, against 34% for teams on no run. But most of that is team quality: good sides go on runs. Rate the team, not the streak.
Goal streaks: a weak signal.
"Three overs in a row" sounds like a trend. Here is how often the next match went the same way — against the average for every match (dashed line).
Over 2.5 runs → next match over 2.5
Average across all matches: 54%.
- no run · 1,630 55%
- last game over · 907 51%
- 2 overs in a row · 462 54%
- 3 overs in a row · 246 54%
- 4+ overs in a row · 317 59%
BTTS runs → next match BTTS
Average across all matches: 54%.
- no run · 1,607 57%
- last game BTTS · 904 51%
- 2 BTTS games in a row · 472 55%
- 3 BTTS games in a row · 253 55%
- 4+ BTTS games in a row · 326 58%
Verdict: after three or more overs in a row, the next match went over 57% of the time — only a few points above the 54% average for all matches. Short goal streaks are not a reason to bet on their own. Look at how both teams score and concede over ten or more games.
Guide · Reading form properly
How to use form without being fooled.
STEP 01
Count six games
Points from the last six league matches: long enough to smooth out luck, short enough to be current.
STEP 02
Compare, don't isolate
Form only means something against the opponent's form. The gap between the two is what moves results.
STEP 03
Check who they played
Four wins against the bottom four is not the same as four wins against the top four. Weigh the schedule.
STEP 04
Ignore short goal runs
For BTTS and Over/Under use ten or more games of scoring and conceding data, not the last three results.

Form guide · FAQ
Form and streaks, explained.
Each number here comes from finished league matches, recounted as new results arrive.
How do I use team form to predict a football match?
Count points from each team's last six league games (three for a win, one for a draw) and compare the two. In 2,001 recent top-five-league matches, when the home side's form was six or more points better, it won 64% of the time; with even form the home win rate fell to 44%. Form is a useful signal — but always check injuries, rotation and the fixture list too.
Does a winning streak mean a team will win again?
Partly. Teams with no current winning run won 34% of their next matches; teams on four or more straight wins won 59%. Most of that is simply quality — good teams put runs together. The streak itself matters less than the level of performance behind it.
If the last three games went over 2.5, will the next one too?
Not much more often than usual. Across recent matches 54% of games went over 2.5 goals. After a team had three or more overs in a row, its next match went over 57% of the time — only slightly more. Short goal streaks carry very little signal — judge the matchup, not the run.
What about BTTS streaks?
Same story. Both teams scored in 54% of all matches, and 57% of the time after a team had three or more BTTS games in a row. Look at each side's scoring and clean-sheet rates over a longer sample instead.
How many games should I look at for form?
Six league games is a good balance: long enough to smooth out one lucky or unlucky result, short enough to reflect the current squad and manager. For goal markets, use a longer run of ten or more games.
Does a losing streak make a team due a win?
No. Teams on four or more straight defeats won 25% of their next matches, against 39% for teams on no run at all. Being due is not a reason to back a side; look for a real change instead, such as key players returning or a new manager.
